Lumber Harvesting, Drying, and Applications

Instruction on how to harvest and correctly make use of locally growing boat building timber. The class includes the milling of wood with a portable Alaska Chainsaw mill. We are typically harvesting black locust, pepperwood, fir, white oak, eucalyptus, and black acacia.


For all levels of woodworking experience.

Number of students

This day class is free to Saturday Class students and apprentices.  Others wishing to join may apply, and will be accepted if space is available on a first come, first serve basis with a tuition cost of $40.

Tool needs

Tools are provided by the School. Students should bring a notebook and sturdy shoes or boots.


Robert Darr is a boatbuilder, designer, and teacher with over thirty years of experience. He has pioneered the use of Californian woods in boatbuilding.
